Förderprojekt – Rite

The musicians Florian Walter and Karl F. Degenhardt, the actress Sindy Tscherrig, the dancer Kanako Minami, the concept and media artist Wolfram Lakaszus and the photographer Caroline Schlueter made an appointment in the Essen KUBIG400.

KUBIG400 is a glass pavillion in Essen's Grugapark that was rescued of demolition in 2014 by an initiative and since then has been used for an ambitious cultural programme.

Initial point was the question how far will a diverse team of artists from different disciplines and positions come in five days.

The participants knew each other "from sight" respectively from isolated bilateral collaborations.

The team was arranged by Florian Walter and Wolfram Lakaszus who also gave the project the starting point in terms of content: a rite was to be drawn/promoted from the Grugapark.

First of all the group received a moodboard and a collection of keywords for preparation.
Another source of inspiration was an expected extraordinarily large temporary population of Canadian geese, which according to media reports  in previous years led to all kind of local political antics.

On site, a collective position was developed in the course of temporal, material and structural conditions, brought into a performative-musical form and presented to the audience on the last day.

The isolation of the place, the tight time-schedule, but also the "functioning chemistry/spirit" between the participants, quickly led the team to a conclusive concept after a phase of exploration.

A large part of the working process took place in public - performative excursions in the outdoor area and the glass facade of the KUBIG400  enabled the visitors of the park to witness the events from outside as well as inside.

It was indeed possible to stage a one-hour bizarre ritual in which the curious guests could get involved on the last day.

A short lecture performance of the Cologne concept and sound artist Rochus Aust, who presented his project RESONATING SUITCASE, could be integrated in the final presentation.
